Staircase and employee insurance: a winning duo

What would you classify as one of the leading causes of accidents and lost lies at work?

If you guessed the stairs, you're right

Accidents related to these elements are accompanied by a sharp increase in costly workers' compensation. They are also associated with a shrinking labor force.

A recent study by the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics showed something serious: in 2015, more than 150 workers died and more than 20,000 injuries were related to scale accidents.

As of 2015, related abuses have been ranked 7th in the Occupational Safety and Health Administration report for the top ten violations in the workplace.

Didn't you say it's time to stress the importance of safe use?

Responding firmly to this question, March was chosen as National Stair Safety Month. The organizers invite business leaders and owners to share safety tips.

How to use stairs safely in the workplace

• Do not use it for purposes other than the functions for which it was designed.
• Do not attempt to use a chair, barrel or anything else.
• Before using the ladder, check for loose or missing parts, wood chips, weathering or other defects. If you find any, don't use it.
• Check electrical connections or other obstacles before installing the work ladder.
• Make sure there is no debris, work tools or other objects around the legs before use.
• Always mount appropriate barricades around you when using in corridors, walkways and high-traffic areas.
• Secure the door closed before working on a door.
• Place the ladder a quarter of its length from the wall.
• Place both sides of the extension ladder on the upper bracket and fix it.
Make sure to keep it at least 3 feet above any point where you will walk.
• Configure it only on a stable and fixed basis.
• Always secure the end of the extension ladder to avoid slipping.
• Have another worker standing at the sides to avoid slipping, especially if they do not have a non-slip function.
• Do not work from a ladder placed on a box, cart, table, scaffold or any other object.
• During use, keep the ladder locks secure and make sure the ladder stretchers are extended and locked.
